Mridangam

Mridangam is the main percussion instrument of the South Indian or Carnatic form of music. Mridangam is used to accompany vocalists, other instruments, Bharathanatyam or other forms of Indian dance.

Tabla is a most famous north Indian percussion instrument commonly played to accompany vocal, instrument and dance.

Mridangam is an ancient instrument from south India, originated more than 2000 years ago.  The body of mridangam is made of jackfruit wood and each end is covered by goatskin.   

The techniques and styles of playing mridangam vary from player to player. However, the concept of the rhythm and the theory behind mridangam playing are always based on is the same.

Tabla means drum in Arabic. Tabla is believed to have Indian origins and renamed under Islamic rule in India. Tabla is a set of two drums, dayan and bayan. The body of dayan is made of wood and played on the right hand while bayan is made of metal and played on the left hand. Both drums are covered by goatskin

Tabla has many playing styles/formats known as gharanas. Gharanas are developed base on the geographical locations and was strictly observed.   

In these mridangam & tabla lessons, we will learn the postures, strokes, sound production techniques, rhythms, taals and theories. Students are also will be given an option to sit for a mridangam or tabla exam at the end of each level.
